Cryptocurrency mined on equipment at Polish police headquarters

Cryptocurrency was mined on the official equipment of the Polish Police Headquarters (KGP), according to Gazeta Wyborcza.

The mining was organized by a civilian IT specialist from the agency, the publication said.

The employee has already been dismissed. The newspaper said that another employee is set to follow.

Concerns were raised about a possible data leak from the law enforcement network in connection with illegal mining. The police denied such a possibility.

“The device used was not connected to any database, and the matter largely concerns electricity theft that is consumed in the so-called cryptocurrency mining,” said Inspector Mariusz Charka.

He confirmed that the case has been forwarded to the Warsaw Prosecutor’s Office.

As reported in Russia, engineers at the closed nuclear center in Sarov (Nizhny Novgorod region) mined bitcoins on a supercomputer. They were all fined, and one former employee received a real prison term.

In Italy, an airport employee installed in work spaces illegal Ethereum mining farms.
