CryptoPunks creators unveil new NFT collection

Renowned for CryptoPunks, the Larva Labs development team has launched a new NFT project called Meebits.

Meebits are 3D pixel avatars that can be used in virtual worlds, games, and VR. They differ from CryptoPunks, which were created in 2D as eight-bit pixel art.

The collection will include characters with algorithmically generated tattoos in the style of Autoglyphs. For each avatar, Larva Labs has provided a “T-shaped” version for use in any game or virtual world that supports them. Owners will be able to “bring them to life”.

“The task of writing voxel glyphs proved to be a more challenging undertaking. We tinkered with this for several years and are proud of the result.”, — said the founders of Larva Labs Matt Hall and John Watkinson.

After creating all 20,000 Meebits, the team will store a file with their hashes on IPFS.

Meebits were distributed through a community grant and a sale. The first entails a free swap for a random Meebit in exchange for an Autoglyph and a CryptoPunk. The latter will be marked as “used” after receiving a 3D-pixel avatar.

“We find the possibility of trading Meebits with one another fascinating. It reminds us of childhood when money seldom participated in transactions. New features and analytics tools will appear in the coming weeks. They will make trading more convenient,” — said the project founders.

From the NFT sale, the team raised about $79.5 million (24,000 ETH). The token sale lasted almost 6.5 hours. The most expensive piece sold for $1 million (303 ETH).

As reported in April 2021, three alien CryptoPunks entered the list of the ten most expensive NFTs.
