A pioneer in artificial intelligence, Mustafa Suleyman has left Google and joined venture firm Greylock Partners. The New York Times reports.
During his time at Google, Suleyman was stripped of certain managerial duties at DeepMind. The company faced complaints that he allegedly bullied subordinates. Suleyman later acknowledged the concerns of his employees.
“I really messed up. I deeply regret how this affected people and the pain they experienced,” he said.
Suleyman held the position of Google’s vice president for product management and AI policy. He joined the company in 2014 when the search giant acquired DeepMind for $650 million.
Under his leadership, the lab began pursuing healthcare research. He also became a key voice in DeepMind’s efforts to curb Google’s cooperation with the U.S. Department of Defense. forced the company to abandon the contract with the military.
What Suleyman will do at Greylock Partners remains unclear.
In December 2021 DeepMind demonstrated a language model with 280 billion parameters.
In August, the lab unveiled a universal architecture for creating artificial intelligence.
In July, DeepMind opened access to a database of 20,000 human protein structures, created by the AlphaFold neural network.
