The Derbyshire Police (UK) have signed a contract with the custodian service Komainu. The company will provide authorities with storage services for confiscated digital assets, according to a пресс-релизе.
Komainu will cooperate with all UK law enforcement agencies. Assistant Chief Constable Angela McLaren noted that specialist units regularly seize cryptocurrency in investigations and need secure storage of digital currencies.
Phil Ariss, head of the cybercrime enforcement program, said in a comment to The Block that previous methods did not guarantee the safekeeping of confiscated assets.
“We need a dedicated solution for storing them, because this involves large sums,” said Ariss.
In 2018, Japanese investment bank Nomura, the developer of hardware wallets Ledger, and investment company CoinShares founded Komainu, a custodian service geared toward institutional investors.
In November 2020, analytics company Chainalysis announced the launch of a program that will help government agencies store and sell confiscated cryptocurrency.
