Detroit Embraces Cryptocurrency for Public Service Payments
Detroit is set to become the largest city in the United States to accept cryptocurrency payments for taxes and other municipal fees. This was announced by Mayor Mike Duggan.
Residents will be able to pay with digital assets through a platform managed by PayPal. The initiative is part of the city’s broader strategy to explore innovative technologies.
“The initiative not only simplifies transactions for Detroit residents with the city but also demonstrates a commitment to welcoming entrepreneurs in the blockchain and technology sectors who aim to transform it,” the press release states.
Cryptocurrency payments will become available in mid-2025, alongside other enhancements in municipal payment systems.
The authorities have also called on entrepreneurs and innovators to present their blockchain application ideas. The city is interested in products that enhance transparency, data security, and optimize public services.
As of November 2024, three U.S. states—Colorado, Utah, and Louisiana—accept cryptocurrency for public service payments.
According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau in 2023, Detroit has a population of approximately 633,000, ranking 26th in terms of city population. In the 1950s, the city was in fourth place with a population of 2 million.
Back in June 2024, U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz introduced a bill that would allow federal income tax payments using the first cryptocurrency.
