Developer of ‘Programmer Killer’ Cursor Secures $900 Million at $9 Billion Valuation

Anysphere, the company behind the programming tool Cursor, has raised $900 million at a valuation of $9 billion, according to Financial Times.

The round was led by Thrive Capital with participation from Andreessen Horowitz, Accel, and other investors.

Anysphere was founded in 2022 by MIT graduates: Michael Truell, Sulekh Asif, Arvid Lunnemark, and Aman Sanger. In January, the company was valued at $2.5 billion after raising $105 million.

The sharp increase in the startup’s valuation is linked to a rise in annual revenue. It has become one of the fastest-growing firms in the software sector.

Cursor is in demand due to its AI-based software development tools. According to its creators, nearly a billion lines of code are generated daily using it.

Programmers can use natural language to instruct the AI instead of manually writing scripts, enhancing productivity.

In 2022, Alameda invested $200,000 in Anysphere during its seed round, but FTX liquidators sold the stake. Today, its valuation could be around $500 million, noted journalist Colin Wu.

With the advancement of artificial intelligence, more companies and developers are programming using this technology. Earlier, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that 20-30% of the company’s code is written by artificial intelligence.

Back in August 2024, British trade unions warned of the risk of millions of job cuts due to AI.
