Developer pins Berlin hard fork date on Ethereum network

The Berlin upgrade in the Ethereum network is planned for block 12,244,000, which will be mined around April 14. Its activation on the Ropsten test network is scheduled for March 10, according to developer Tim Beiko.

Node operators are advised to update their software several days ahead of the expected hard fork. TurboGeth and EthereumJS clients will provide Berlin support only on mainnet.

No further action from Ether holders will be required in the absence of instructions from services that hold the coins.

The final Berlin release contains four Ethereum Improvement Proposals, including changes to the gas-cost calculation algorithm (EIP-2565 and EIP-2929), as well as new transaction types (EIP-2930 and EIP-2718).

The final Berlin version did not include the proposal EIP-1559, which would imply burning a portion of transaction fees.

It divided mining pools into two camps . Opposed were Ethermine and SparkPool, which together with several other participants account for 60% of the network’s hash rate.

As a result, EIP-1559 was included in the next July’s the London hard fork.

In February, Ethereum miners’ revenues from validating transactions jumped 122.1% from January. The share of fees accounted for 52.9% of total revenue, which reached a record $1.36 billion.
