Developers report outage of Caribbean CBDC system

The DCash transaction system for eight Caribbean island states has been offline since January 14, 2022. Bloomberg said project manager Karina Johnson.

She said that representatives of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, together with the service provider, are doing everything possible to restore the ability to conduct transactions as soon as possible.

“All DCash applications and architecture, including central banks and financial institutions, as well as merchant and wallet apps, remain secure and unchanged,” Johnson said.

The timeline for completing the restoration work is not yet known.

In late March 2021 the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank launched a pilot CBDC project in late March 2021. DCash became the world’s first official digital currency.

The system is operated by Barbados-based fintech company Bitt. The project has not left the pilot phase, but it has already been rolled out in Dominica, Montserrat, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda.
