Dogecoin to Enhance Capabilities with ZK-Proofs

Developers of DogeOS have proposed adding support for ZK-proofs to Dogecoin. The OP_CHECKZKP initiative aims to transform the blockchain from a payment system into a platform for DeFi, gaming, and other on-chain applications.

The DogeOS team is also behind the MyDoge wallet, which boasts over 500,000 users.

The upgrade will allow computations to be verified off-chain without revealing confidential data. According to the press release, the initiative will pave the way for creating credit markets backed by DOGE, decentralized exchanges, and verifiable multiplayer games.

Technically, the proposal introduces a new opcode, OP_CHECKZKP, supporting Groth16 and PLONK proof systems. The upgrade is planned as a soft fork, ensuring backward compatibility without the need for a new virtual machine.

ZK-Rollups technology will enable processing thousands of transactions per second off-chain and confirming them on the main blockchain using “compact” cryptographic proofs.

“Dogecoin already has one of the most dedicated communities. The upgrade will give them tools for more — turning the beloved currency into a platform capable of competing with any other network,” stated DogeOS CEO Jordan Jefferson.

The DogeOS team is also developing an EVM-compatible zkVM, which will use Dogecoin for settlements. The OP_CHECKZKP upgrade will make these settlements secure and verifiable. It will also open up possibilities for confidential transactions and creating bridges for DOGE between networks.

Earlier in July, Nasdaq-listed mining company Bit Origin announced a strategy to replenish reserves in DOGE by $500 million.
