Dogma director to sell new horror film as NFT

Film director, producer and actor Kevin Smith will auction his new horror film, ‘Killroy Was Here’, as a non-fungible token (NFT), Deadline reports.

The NFT buyer will have the right to display, distribute and stream the film.

According to the director, this reminds him of selling the film ‘Clerks’, which he brought to the 1994 Sundance Film Festival. Miramax bought the rights from Smith, who had independently shot the low-budget black-and-white film, for $250,000.

The NFT film auction will run on Crypto Studio, a platform built on top of an online store selling products related to the View Askewniverse. It is the setting for most of Smith’s works, or is at least referenced in them, such as in the director’s best-known film — ‘Dogma’. In the fictional town of View Askewniverse also reside the most recognizable characters of his films, Jay and Silent Bob.

“We’re not trying to raise funds by selling the film as an NFT—the token is the finished film. And if this works, we’ll suddenly have a new scene where I and creative minds better than mine can tell our stories,” Smith said.

In the director’s and his team’s plan, Crypto Studio will become a boutique crypto-gallery. They plan to host what its creators call ‘regular distribution’ of Smokin tokens. The coins will mark different films about Jay and Silent Bob.

For creating and distributing NFTs, Smith is collaborating with Semkhor.

In the gallery portion of Crypto Studio, established or emerging artists will be featured, who wish to create and sell NFT works featuring Smith’s iconic characters.

“This allows us to draw attention to the artists we love and introduce the community to their style through our characters. We provide Jay and Silent Bob, you create the art, our partner Semkhor releases the NFT, and everyone simply shares the profits,” the director said.

As of this writing, Beeple’s Everydays: The First 5000 Days remains the most expensive NFT sale, having sold for $69.3 million.
