EA chief executive sees AI as boon for video games

The chief executive of Electronic Arts (EA), Laura Miele, said that artificial intelligence is having a positive impact on the video game industry.

“[AI] will definitely optimize tools and workflows, and help developers and players create a better gaming experience. The technology will significantly expand the content created and increase its release frequency.”

In her view, neural networks are “incredibly transforming” EA’s business model and will take it to a new level of globalization. The company’s gaming ecosystem counts around 700 million users, so AI will assist in content moderation, the head of the company believes.

Miele noted that EA “has always been a company that deals with artificial intelligence,” dating back to the Madden NFL football simulator from 1988. The technology was used there to program virtual opponents.

However, now, in Miele’s view, AI is in a “new phase” that will significantly affect the future of video games.

During the May corporate briefing, the EA chief executive noted that artificial intelligence can help developers accelerate “creative iteration” and “the speed of content creation.”

That same month, EA CEO Andrew Wilson highlighted the main problem of rapid technological development — job losses. He stressed that the agricultural and industrial revolutions led to widespread displacement of the workforce. However, in the current situation, employment opportunities are likely to rise significantly, the head of the company added.

Earlier in July, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger stated about plans to embed artificial intelligence in every product created by the company.

Earlier Nvidia unveiled processors for AI workloads, as well as a range of services for developers.
