Edward Snowden criticises NFT-game developers for creating scarcity

The former employee of АНБ and ЦРУ of the United States, Edward Snowden, during the online conference BlockDown DeData, expressed concern about how some people or firms may use non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the gaming industry.

“There are people who are trying to create artificial scarcity in a post-scarcity era. I believe the community should reject unnecessary artificial scarcity in the interests of a certain class of investors,” Snowden explained.

He also described certain aspects of metaverses as “horrific, disgusting and tragic” due to the drive to profit from users escaping reality.

Ethereum co-founder and founder of Polkadot Gavin Wood did not agree with Snowden:

“I have no problem with game developers restricting access to their products in the same way as they have for decades. I view NFTs as a more flexible way to restrict access to a product.”

Earlier Snowden sold his first non-fungible token for 2224 ETH. The NFT ‘Stay Free’ depicts his digitised portrait as excerpts from documents with a lawsuit alleging NSA violations of U.S. law.

In late November, the Collins English Dictionary named NFT the word of the year for 2021.
