El Salvador Marks Bitcoin Law Anniversary with 21 BTC Purchase
Meanwhile, Metaplanet announced the purchase of 136 BTC.
On September 7, the government of El Salvador purchased 21 BTC worth $2.3 million to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the Bitcoin law. This was announced by President Nayib Bukele.

In 2021, the Central American country became the first in the world to recognize digital gold as legal tender.
El Salvador’s state crypto reserve has reached 6313 BTC, valued at $701 million. At the end of August, the authorities distributed these funds across 14 new addresses due to potential threats from quantum computing.
The country has been purchasing 1 BTC daily since March last year, despite obligations to the IMF. In 2024, the parties signed an agreement that limited El Salvador’s acquisition of digital gold in exchange for a 40-month loan of $1.4 billion.
The International Monetary Fund is pushing for the cessation of any crypto initiatives. According to the regulator, state involvement in the digital asset sphere poses serious risks.
In response to the IMF’s demands, Bukele emphasized that “the purchases will not stop.” However, reports of Bitcoin acquisitions contradict an official statement sent by El Salvador’s finance minister to the International Monetary Fund in July, which stated that the authorities had stopped replenishing the crypto reserve in February.
Since 2021, the country has also been involved in mining digital assets. Back then, El Salvador began mining the first cryptocurrency using geothermal volcanic energy. In October 2023, it launched its own mining pool, Lava Pool.
Earlier reports indicated that over three years, the Central American state mined nearly 474 BTC.
At the time of writing, El Salvador’s share in the global Bitcoin hash rate stands at 1.1 EH/s.

Currently, Metaplanet ranks sixth among corporate holders of the first cryptocurrency.
In June, the company’s CEO, Simon Gerovich, stated that the firm intends to acquire a total of 210,000 BTC by 2027. This could potentially elevate it to the second position in the rankings.

Almost simultaneously, Strategy’s CEO, Michael Saylor, hinted at another digital gold purchase. On September 7, he shared a screenshot of the firm’s Bitcoin portfolio with the caption “needs more orange.”
