The Electrum Bitcoin wallet team released version 4.0.5, addressing the issue with accessing the app on macOS Big Sur.

In early August, Electrum users opened a discussion on GitHub, reporting that the app would not launch after updating Mac computers to the beta version of its new Big Sur variant.

A developer under the nickname SomberNight suggested that it was related to how Big Sur handles Python, the programming language used by Electrum. The wallet’s graphical interface did not work, but it was possible to run it from the source code.

In the new release, the developers circumvented the issue by using an older version of PyQt — the set of extensions for Python’s graphical framework.

Hackers stole 1980 BTC using a fake Electrum update. 1400 BTC of these losses were attributed to a single user.
