Elliptic: Twitter hackers who breached accounts laundered more than half of the bitcoins through two mixers
The attackers routed more than half of the bitcoins obtained through the hack of multiple Twitter accounts through the ChipMixer and Wasabi Wallet mixers. This is stated in the new report by Elliptic.
To these two mixers the hackers sent 56.5% of the total amount of stolen bitcoins (30.4 BTC) — 17.18 BTC, worth around $195,000 at the time of writing.
A small portion of these coins ended up on exchanges and in trading and gambling services.
Earlier on July 15, hackers compromised a number of Twitter accounts and posted messages about a fake bitcoin giveaway.
The company said the attackers gained access to the accounts thanks to a social-engineering attack aimed at Twitter staff with access to internal systems.
Subsequently the platform said that hackers compromised 45 celebrity accounts by password resets.
According to the latest official information, the Twitter attackers gained access to internal tools of the social network through phishing targeting employees’ mobile phones.
