Representatives of DOGE have reached out to the public, requesting information on potential corruption and abuse within the SEC.
The department is set to commence the audit in the coming days, according to Politico, citing its own sources.
Maxine Waters, Deputy Chair of the House Financial Services Committee, stated that DOGE and Musk’s access to confidential SEC data, such as the Consolidated Audit Trail system, poses a threat to financial market security. Waters outlined her concerns in a letter to Acting SEC Chair Mark Uyeda.
The Trump administration has stated that Musk does not play a direct role in DOGE’s operations, and the president himself has promised to prevent potential conflicts of interest.
Back in January 14, 2025, the regulator filed a lawsuit against Musk for failing to disclose the timing of his stock purchases in X. According to the agency, he continued “acquiring shares at artificially low prices,” spending over $500 million, while “underpaying by at least $150 million.”
