Email services hit by DDoS attacks as hackers demand ransom in Bitcoin

Several email providers were subjected to DDoS attacks, with unknown attackers demanding ransom in Bitcoin to end the attacks. The Record, citing sources.

According to the publication, the attacks began on October 21 and affected Runbox, Posteo, Fastmail, TheXYZ, Guerilla Mail and Kolab Now.

On October 22, representatives of Posteo подтвердили this information. According to a post on the blog, the attackers sent a letter with threats and ransom demands.

“We will not pay the stated amount. Companies should not allow criminals to blackmail themselves under any circumstances — otherwise they will become even more attractive to them”, the statement says.

Later, RunBox заявил about the attack. They clarified that they had “never paid criminals” and do not plan to start.

At present, all services except Guerilla Mail are available.

The publication, citing one of the letters from the attackers, indicated that they demanded 0.06 BTC ($3,828 at the time of writing). Some messages, however, contained an incorrect wallet address, The Record added.

DDoS attacks also targeted the British VoIP service provider Voipfone and the game server provider Sparked. However, sources said that responsibility for them rested with other hackers.

In July the information resource Bitcoin.org подвергся DDoS-атаке — at that time the attackers demanded 0.5 BTC (more than $17,600 at the time).

In September, the company «Яндекс» became the victim of самой масштабной DDoS-атаки в истории интернета.
