Estonia’s prime minister does not back Bitcoin legalisation in the country

Several major players in the crypto industry, including Coinbase, urged the Estonian government to legalise cryptocurrencies, but Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has not yet backed the idea. She said so in an interview with City A.M.

Kallas stressed that she approaches the topic of cryptocurrencies with great caution.

As one of the main problems associated with digital assets, the prime minister cited their use by cybercriminals during ransomware attacks.

According to her, cryptocurrencies are ‘insurance’ for criminals and ‘bad guys know this’.

The Prime Minister also commented on the recent recognition of Bitcoin as a means of settlement:

“As far as I understand what I see in El Salvador, things are not going so well.”

In 2020, Estonian authorities revoked licences from more than 1,000 companies active in the digital-asset sector.
