Ethereum Foundation introduces Fe language for smart contracts

The Ethereum ecosystem has gained a new programming language for writing smart contracts called Fe. This was сообщил developer Christoph Burgdorff.

According to him, Fe is a variation of the Vyper language. Initially the idea was to create an alternative compiler to improve Vyper’s safety, but the languages diverged in syntax. Some properties of Fe borrow from Rust.

“It is quite likely that Fe will start to resemble Rust more, as we continue to add new features,” noted Burgdorff.

As a name, the developers chose the symbol for iron on the periodic table. According to Burgdorff, iron conveys a sense of robustness, reinforcing the perception of the compiler’s correctness.

Previously Solidity was used for writing smart contracts. The Ethereum Foundation believes that greater choice will positively affect the development of the ecosystem.

Burgdorff noted that Fe development has accelerated in recent months. He said that by the end of 2020 the language would have all the functions necessary to work with ERC-20 contracts.

Earlier, on October 13, Ethereum developers launched the Zinken test network. It will serve as the dress rehearsal for creating the ETH 2.0 genesis block.
