Ethereum’s L2 Developers Agree on Implementing ‘Based’ Rollups

Representatives from leading Ethereum L2 projects have pledged to work on implementing so-called based rollups to enhance security and reduce network fragmentation.

According to Jesse Pollak, head of Base, “based” rollups are a flexible and powerful tool. Their implementation will strengthen connectivity with L1.

Ben Jones, director of the Optimism Foundation, added that the new solution will improve interaction between the base and second levels of Ethereum.

“We are here to support this,” he added.

Proposed in March 2023 by developer Justin Drake, “based” rollups will eliminate the use of centralized sequencers.

They will return the verification process to L1 and increase the network’s degree of decentralization — block creation will be carried out by all Ethereum validators.

The so-called native rollups will improve the transaction execution process at the base level, making the blockchain more composable.

As a result, L2s will lose a significant portion of revenue generated from MEV.

According to Dune Analytics, at the time of writing, Arbitrum has received 63,688 ETH (~$195.5 million) in fees, while Base has received 29,115 ETH (~$89.4 million).

The abandonment of centralized sequencers will result in an increase in transaction confirmation time from one to 12 seconds.

Several L2 project leaders, including Taiko CEO Daniel Wang, have advocated for the implementation of “FABRIC” — an infrastructure for launching “based” rollups and solving compatibility issues.

Taiko employs Based Contestable Rollup — a customizable rollup design with multiple proofs.

In January, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated in a new article that the ecosystem will continue to scale primarily through L2 solutions.
