Experts report nearly 24% rise in DDoS attacks in Q3 2021

The total number of DDoS attacks worldwide in Q3 2021 rose by almost 24% compared with the same period in 2020. This was stated by specialists at Kaspersky Lab, according to TASS.

In August, a record daily number of such attacks was recorded in years — more than eight thousand per day. The majority of targets were in the United States, Hong Kong and China.

A new botnet Meris was used to carry out some of the largest DDoS attacks. Experts believe it was employed in the attack on Yandex.

According to cybersecurity experts at Kaspersky Lab, in the last two years groups engaged in covert mining and the organization of DDoS attacks have competed for resources, as many botnets were used for both purposes.

“Earlier we saw a decline in the number of DDoS, linked to the explosive rise in cryptocurrency prices, and now we are seeing a redistribution of resources. DDoS is profitable, and we think the number of such incidents will continue to rise in Q4, as is traditionally the case toward year-end,” the company noted.

Earlier in June, Avast reported that tens of thousands of computers in Russia were infected by the DirtyMoe botnet, whose main aim is to install hidden miners.
