Fake Gemini YouTube accounts surface

The cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, owned by the Winklevoss brothers, warned users about two counterfeit Gemini accounts on the video hosting site YouTube.

Representatives of the exchange said that an unknown person used the Gemini brand and logo.

”These fraudulent accounts do not belong to our company. We have reported them to YouTube.”

Over the past six months this has not been an isolated incident. In October, investor Anndy Lian appealed to the video hosting platform to remove fake videos allegedly linked to Gemini and the Winklevoss brothers. At that time one of the videos had over 105,000 views and 2,800 likes.

In July, Gemini reported the existence of counterfeit accounts of the exchange on several social networks.

In March, with a fake account of Ripple head Brad Garlinghouse, users were urged to send from 2 to 500,000 XRP and allegedly receive in return from 20,000 to 5 million tokens.

In April, Ripple accused the video hosting platform of harming its reputation and brand. In the same month, YouTube’s administration temporarily blocked the account of fintech company’s CTO David Schwartz, deeming it fraudulent.

Videos about Bitcoin giveaways on behalf of celebrities became a basis for a class-action lawsuit against the video hosting platform. In July, co-founder of Apple Steve Wozniak joined the suit, whose identity was also used in the videos.

In August, a victim of attackers, the popular tech blogger John Prosser, had his YouTube account hacked and a fake Bitcoin giveaway launched.

Earlier, Xrplorer researchers stated that video hosting users transferred 1,543,000 XRP (~$477,000) to the organizers of such broadcasts.
