Finnish Project Utilizes Bitcoin Mining Heat for Home Heating

Hashlabs Mining is implementing a project in Finland that generates heat using bitcoin mining devices to warm homes.

The solution combines hydro-cooled ASIC devices, specifically the WhatsMiner M63S model, with the Finnish district heating system. The heat generated from mining the leading cryptocurrency will be transferred through a network of insulated pipes to several residential buildings.

The initiative aims to provide households with the benefits of industrial mining.

“The system provides heat to several buildings from a single cluster. Heat is generated at the production site in the form of hot water, which is delivered through underground pipes to connected buildings,” explained Hashlabs Mining co-founder Jaran Mellerud.

The water heated by WhatsMiner to approximately 70°C is intended to replace heat sourced from peat, coal, and other fossil fuels.

According to Mellerud, the company’s local partner has already integrated two bitcoin installations with Finnish heating networks and is currently implementing a third.

“The best source of reliable high-temperature water for district heating is bitcoin mining,” added the head of Hashlabs Mining.

According to Statistics Finland, as of 2019, most buildings in the country were heated using heat from wood fuel (35%), coal (18%), and peat (15%).

Previously, Unblock Global raised over $15 million for cryptocurrency mining using flare gas from Vaca Muerta in Argentina, the world’s second-largest shale field.

Back in August 2023, the American firm Nodal Power raised $13 million for mining “on waste.”
