First Child Born Through AI-Assisted IVF

The first child conceived through an automated intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) system with digital control has been born. This was reported by scientists from the biotechnology company Conceivable Life Sciences in a new article in the journal Reproductive Biomedicine Online.

Conceivable has integrated artificial intelligence and robotics to automate over 200 steps necessary for embryo creation during IVF.

The ICSI system, developed and widely adopted in the 1990s, is regularly used for conception. Fertilization is achieved by injecting a sperm cell into the center of a mature egg.

The main procedures are primarily performed manually by experienced embryologists, which can lead to errors due to human factors.

“They get tired and distracted, like most professionals, so mistakes happen that can reduce the chances of fertilization and childbirth,” noted Jacques Cohen from Conceivable Life Sciences.

The Conceivable workstation automates each of the 23 steps of the standard ICSI procedure, improves egg survival, and optimizes injection timing.

The processes can be managed by both artificial intelligence and a remote operator. In the latest iteration of the system, scientists used AI for positioning the sperm in the injection pipette and conducting the microinjection into the egg.

“The system’s artificial intelligence autonomously selects a sperm and precisely immobilizes its midsection with a laser, ready for injection,” explained Gerardo Mendizabal-Ruiz, PhD and lead engineer at the company.

The birth reported in the article involved a 40-year-old woman. The patient had previously undergone unsuccessful IVF, resulting in one mature egg but no embryos.

In the described cycle, five eggs were fertilized using automated ICSI and three manually. In the first case, four achieved normal fertilization, while in the second, all three did. Two blastocyst-stage embryos were implanted in the uterus, both from automated ICSI. One resulted in a successful pregnancy, which proceeded normally and concluded with the birth of a healthy boy.

Such an approach to automating IVF has been practiced before, but in those cases, not all steps were performed by the machine.

In 2025, Conceivable raised $18 million in a Series A funding round.

Earlier in March, Google announced a range of AI products and features for the healthcare sector. These include “open” models for discovering new drugs called TxGemma.
