Forbes magazine sold at auction a cover featuring Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss that had been transformed into a non-fungible token (NFT) for $333 333.
The bidding took place on the platform Nifty Gateway, with the top bid placed by a participant using the alias mondoir.
The original cover of the issue was shot by photographer Michael Prince; artist Yosi Sodeoka transformed it for the NFT titled “Merchants of the Metaverse” into a 15-second digital artwork.
“Watching the rapid rise of cryptocurrency and its spread across the world, we capture a unique moment in time and ourselves play a role. By turning our cover into an NFT, we show that journalism is as enduring as unique works of art,” said Forbes Chief Content Officer Randall Lane.
The proceeds will be donated by Forbes to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF).
In Forbes’ story, the magazine recounts the twins and their path in the cryptocurrency industry. It noted that the Winklevosses acquired Nifty Gateway in 2019 from the Griffin brothers and Duncan Cock Foster.
Earlier, TIME sold three covers in NFT format for $385,000 on the SuperRare marketplace. The buyer was a user with the pseudonym mondoir1.
