The post of the chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will be held by financier Gary Gensler, Reuters reports, citing sources.
According to the publication, the appointment will take place after Joe Biden’s inauguration.
Previously, Gensler worked at Goldman Sachs. From 2009 to 2014 he headed the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
Gensler has also conducted research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the intersection of fintech and public policy, teaching lectures on blockchain and digital currencies. In the past he has cautioned against likening cryptocurrencies to Ponzi schemes. In 2018 the financier stated that trading Ethereum and Ripple could violate U.S. law.
In November, led Biden’s transition plan for financial-sector oversight.
Earlier, on December 23, 2020, the post of SEC chair stepped down Jay Clayton. Under his leadership the commission was not crypto-friendly, denying registration of new products and pursuing lawsuits with companies.
On December 25, interim SEC chair became Elad Roisman.
