Former Russian police officer jailed for 12 years for Bitcoin bribe

The former head of the Department for Control of Drug Trafficking within the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Republic of Mordovia was found guilty of receiving bitcoins as a bribe. The Russian prosecutor’s office сообщает.

According to investigators, in July 2022 the 38-year-old lieutenant colonel agreed to provide unrelated parties information about police actions in exchange for 2 BTC (more than $28,000). At the time of his arrest the defendant had received part of the sum, amounting to 68,000 rubles ($770).

The Supreme Court of Mordovia sentenced the former policeman to 12 years in a strict-regime penal colony, a fine of 12.8 million rubles, and deprived him of his rank. The defendant is also prohibited from working in law enforcement for 10 years.

Earlier in October, a Moscow court arrested in absentia the third investigator по делу о взятке in the amount of 2718.6 BTC from participants of the Infraud Organization hacker group.

The principal figure — the former head of the investigative department of the committee for the Tversky District Marat Tambiev has been in custody since 2022. He had изъяли 1032,1 BTC.

In September, in the same case, взяли под стражу one of Tambiev’s subordinates.
