Free TON Community Launches Contest to Create a Wikipedia-like Alternative Free of Its Flaws

The Free TON is hosting конкурс, which is the first stage of the Freecyclopedia project. The aim of the project is to create an analogue of Wikipedia that lacks the flaws of its predecessor. The outcome of the current contest should be a specification for the future resource.

The organizers flagged as the main problem “the rules and community mechanics of Wikipedia that deter participation”:

«The existing community is far smaller than it could be. Many mechanics and bureaucratic procedures are easily abused. This leads to a lack of trust among members of the community. These problems reduce user engagement», according to the description of the contest.

Participants in the contest should propose a solution that simultaneously enhances decentralization and the quality of articles in the new “world encyclopedia.” The solution could be based on the Practical BFT Governance, used in Free TON’s on-chain governance system, the organizers say. The project described in the submission must also be “resilient to politically and commercially motivated attacks”.

The contest description lists a detailed list of existing problems of “Wikipedia.” Among them, in particular, bureaucracy and concentration of power in the hands of “old-timers”, low article quality, underappreciation of editors’ contributions, and an imperfect consensus system, which can cause disputes about the content of some articles to drag on for many years. For solving each of the problems, the organizers award extra points.

Anyone may participate in the contest; the only condition is having an address on the Free TON network, which must be indicated in the application. The total prize fund is 175,000 TON Crystal (about $87,000 at press time); prizes will be awarded to the 10 participants with the highest scores.

Earlier in the community a competition was held to create a solution for auditing elections at various levels in Guatemala. In early July a major validator tournament called the Rust Cup started, aimed at testing a new version of the Free TON node.
