The Free TON Governing Council, by a vote, approved the proposal to rename the project to Everscale. The native TON Crystal coin will take the same name (ticker EVER).
“We need to shed the constraints imposed by the history and heritage of the TON brand to grow at a new stage of the project’s development. In particular, to achieve listing of the native coin on leading exchanges and to have the ability to enter into major partnerships, especially in the United States,” the description of the proposal put to the on-chain vote states.
The authors noted that the planned transition to the new version of the Free TON node, written in Rust, is “a perfect moment for a rebranding.”
An open discussion about choosing a new name took place over several months on the Free TON forum. In the final list there were seven names. The final option was chosen, among other criteria, based on the word’s distinctiveness, search-engine queries, and existing trademarks.
Earlier, on November 8, Free TON burned more than half of all native-coin emissions worth over $1.1 billion. This move was part of a broad reform of the project’s governance.
