Unknown person withdrew 100 ETH to Binance.

An unknown person withdrew 100 ETH ($345,385 at the time of the transaction) from the WEX bitcoin exchange wallet. The funds were sent to Binance.

This is the first withdrawal from the bankrupt exchange’s wallet in three years. Its total balance currently stands at 9,916 ETH ($34.2 million).

According to Polish Gazeta Wyborcza, on August 11 local law enforcement in Warsaw detained the former WEX owner Dmitry Vasilyev. ForkLog confirmed this information with Indefibank CEO Sergey Mendeleev.

According to him, Vasilyev was detained on an Interpol warrant. He is under arrest and awaits extradition to Kazakhstan.

ForkLog has sent a request to the consular section of the Belarusian embassy in Warsaw. At present, we have not been able to obtain official confirmation of this information.

In July 2018, due to ‘technical works’, the WEX exchange ceased full withdrawals. At the same time, according to Dmitry Vasilyev, a contract transferring ownership of WEX to former DPR fighter Dmitry ‘Moryachka’ Khavchenko was signed.

In August of that year, the bankruptcy of the exchange and suspension of its operations became known. An initiative group of clients calculated that losses exceeded $400 million. Vasilyev personally is attributed with the withdrawal of $200 million.

In October 2018, Binance froze accounts that had received 93,000 ETH from wallets linked to WEX. At the time of writing, the value of these assets exceeds $321 million.

Criminal cases have been opened against Dmitry Vasilyev in several countries. In March 2019, Kazakh law enforcement officers, in absentia, recognised him as a suspect in fraud. In April, Vasilyev was placed on an interstate wanted list — across the CIS.

In Russia, a case against him at the request of WEX clients was opened in November 2018.
