The mayor of the Gold Coast (Australia), Tom Tate, did not rule out that residents could pay taxes in digital assets in the future. This was reported by ABC News.
“Why can’t taxes be paid in cryptocurrency if the risk is not large? Volatility isn’t that bad. […] We are innovative. […] We always look to the next level,” said the official.
The mayor announced that the council intends to hire a chief investment officer to “encourage innovation”.
The comment came just before the budget for Australia’s sixth-largest city, which is home to 679,000 residents, was approved.
In 2020, Tom Tate was appointed to a third term.
Adam Poulton of Blockchain Australia noted that the council should assess its risk appetite before deciding whether to accept cryptocurrency as payment.
“The last thing they would want to do is collect taxes equivalent to $2,000 in Bitcoin and face its price drop by half,” explained the expert.
As reported in Рио-де-Жанейро, authorities announced the possibility of paying taxes in Bitcoin from 2023.
Earlier, with a similar initiative, выступили власти Майами.
