Google Transforms Gemini into an AI Tutor

Google has introduced the Guided Learning tool as part of the Gemini platform. The chatbot can now function as an AI tutor.

The service is designed “not just to provide answers,” but to help users “deeply understand the material.”

“Working closely with external experts in the field of education, we concluded that simply improving prompts is not enough to create a meaningful knowledge acquisition tool,” wrote Maureen Heymans, Vice President of Learning and Sustainable Development, in the company blog.

The release came a week after OpenAI launched a similar mode, Study Mode, which also helps to work through tasks step-by-step rather than just providing ready answers.

Both companies introduced these tools amid concerns that chatbots might undermine the educational process by delivering ready-made answers without user involvement.

With Guided Learning, Gemini will break down tasks step-by-step and tailor explanations to the specific needs of the user. The feature employs images, diagrams, videos, and interactive quizzes to help users better grasp the material and test their knowledge instead of receiving a ready answer.

“Whether preparing for an exam on enzymes, drafting an essay on the importance of bee populations to our food systems, or exploring a passion for photography — Guided Learning becomes your partner in collaborative thinking, helping you understand the essence at every stage,” noted Heymans.

Google also announced efforts to enhance the educational capabilities of the Gemini system. The chatbot will now automatically incorporate images, diagrams, and YouTube videos into responses to simplify the understanding of complex topics.

Users can also request the AI to create flashcards and study guides based on quiz results or other educational materials.

The corporation has offered a free one-year subscription to the Google AI Pro plan for students in the US, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil. This includes advanced features such as access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, NotebookLM, Veo 3, Deep Research, and other tools.

Back in June, Google introduced an AI agent to assist with programming. It understands natural language prompts when working with the terminal.
