Google Unveils AI Tool Disco Powered by Gemini 3

Google Labs unveils Disco, an AI tool for web-surfing using Gemini 3.

Google Labs has introduced an experimental web-surfing tool called Disco, powered by the AI model Gemini 3.

The AI-based GenTabs changes the approach to tab management by transforming them into separate customizable applications.

“We’ve all faced the frustrating situation of having to keep dozens of tabs open while working on a complex task — such as researching a topic or planning a trip,” noted the corporation.

GenTabs analyzes open tabs and chat history to determine task context. Based on this data, the tool automatically generates interactive web applications.

“Whether you’re creating a meal plan, planning a trip to Japan to see the cherry blossoms, or helping your schoolchild study planets, GenTabs will help you get the most out of the internet,” stated Google.

Users do not need programming skills: they simply describe the desired tool and then refine it using natural language.

Disco is currently in closed beta testing. Access can be obtained through a waitlist.

“The most interesting ideas from Disco will find their way into larger Google products,” the corporation noted.

Browser Wars

The browser remains a key entry point to the internet, prompting AI startups and corporations to challenge Google’s dominance in this niche. A notable moment was OpenAI’s interest in potentially acquiring Chrome.

“If ChatGPT were integrated into Chrome, it could offer a truly incredible experience. We would have the opportunity to introduce users to what the first interaction with artificial intelligence looks like,” remarked ChatGPT product manager Nick Turley.

Later, Perplexity offered to buy Chrome for $34.5 billion.

The startup made the offer after the U.S. Department of Justice urged Google to sell the browser as part of an antitrust lawsuit the company lost last year. The court ruled that the corporation unlawfully maintains a monopoly in the internet search market.

In September, the court decided that Google is not required to sell Chrome, calling such a measure excessive.

AI companies have taken their own paths.

Perplexity launched its own AI-based web browser, Comet. Its main feature is an integrated AI search that summarizes query results.

Users also have access to the Comet Assistant agent: it handles routine tasks, including tab management, web surfing, email, and calendar work.

OpenAI also unveiled its browser. The solution is called Atlas, with its central feature being the “Ask ChatGPT” button. Upon clicking, users can ask the AI about the content of the open tab.

On September 30, Opera launched its AI-focused browser, Neon.

The development of the new solution was first revealed in May, but the product was closed at the time. From September 30, the company began sending invitations to select users: access to the product is provided by subscription for $19.99 per month.

Key features of Neon include:

  • a familiar chatbot for communication and answers to questions;
  • Neon Do agent mode — helps perform tasks. For example, AI can independently summarize a Substack post and send it to a Slack channel;
  • contextual memory: the browser analyzes action history, allowing users to request details from previously viewed YouTube videos or read articles.

Anthropic chose a different strategy and instead of a separate browser, released an extension for Chrome. The Claude-based agent works in a sidebar, retains the context of all open tabs, and can independently perform actions on web pages, handling some user tasks.

Microsoft is not standing aside — it added a new Copilot Mode feature to Edge. The new mode changes the usual web-surfing scenario: upon activation, a special tab opens where search and navigation are conducted through dialogue with a neural network. When visiting sites, Copilot remains active, allowing users to consult the assistant at any time.

In November, Amazon demanded that Perplexity remove the browser with an integrated AI agent from its online store.
