Hackers attacked a Foxconn factory and demanded 1,804 BTC as ransom
One of Foxconn’s factories, the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer, was hit by the DoppelPaymer ransomware. Hackers demanded 1,804 BTC (about $33.8 million at the time of writing), according to Bleeping Computer.
The attackers targeted the facility in Mexico on November 29. They stole about 100 GB of files, encrypted the North American segment (1,200–1,400 servers), and deleted 20–30 TB of backups.
Some documents were published by the hackers. According to some reports, among the stolen data there were no employees’ personal data or financial reports.
Earlier in November, the DoppelPaymer group attacked the Taiwanese laptop maker Compal Electronics. The attackers demanded 1,100 BTC for decryption.
Earlier, Delaware County authorities in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania paid the ransomware operators $500,000 in bitcoins.
