Hackers demanded $2.25 million in Bitcoin from Chinese electric-vehicle maker NIO.

Hackers demanded the largest Chinese electric-vehicle maker, NIO, pay $2.25 million in Bitcoin for the information they had stolen.

After receiving the email from the hackers on December 11, the company set up a special committee to investigate the incident.

Preliminary checks showed that the stolen data consisted of ‘some basic information about users and vehicle sales up to August 2021’.

NIO promptly informed law enforcement and regulatory authorities about the incident. The company continues its own investigation into the leak.

During 2021, the number of cyberattacks on government and commercial entities increased by 50% compared with the previous year.
