Hackers escalate attempts to steal Telegram channels using a Trojan

Telegram channel owners have increasingly been receiving messages from criminals containing malware that can hijack their accounts. 

As reported by «Ъ», such messages are circulated under the guise of advertising placement offers. They contain attachments with a Trojan. If the victim opens the file, the malware will steal credentials stored on the computer and grant covert remote control of the Telegram channel, Group-IB explained.

Experts noted that the uptick in malicious activity on Telegram may be linked to the rising number of users of the messenger.

Telegram’s active user base has topped 500 million.

The influx of users may be linked to discontent with WhatsApp’s changes to its privacy policy, as well as migration of supporters of former U.S. President Donald Trump to the platform.
