Hackers stole 300,000 USDT from investors who stored private keys in Evernote

U.S. authorities have seized more than 300,000 USDT in connection with a cryptocurrency wallet hack. The hackers gained access using the Evernote cloud service.

In February, Shisuan Cai purchased 300,900 USDT on the cryptocurrency exchange Binance. He transferred the stablecoins to a wallet he controlled with his business partner Jiang Chen. Within minutes, unknown actors moved the tokens without their owners’ consent, and later sent 200,600 USDT to another address.

The attackers exploited the fact that Chen stored the private key in the Evernote app. The issuer of the Tether stablecoin froze the assets when Cai reported to the Los Angeles Police Department.

In May, a court issued a warrant to seize 300,000 USDT. Following Tether’s instructions, the assets were unlocked and transferred to a wallet under the authorities’ control. The stablecoins will remain there until a court rules.

Earlier, the popular blogger Yan Balina fell victim to scammers. During a live stream on his YouTube channel, unknown actors withdrew more than $2 million in various cryptocurrencies — the owner’s private and public keys were stored in Evernote.

Earlier in October, lax security measures allowed hackers to access 2,000 Robinhood accounts on the crypto-friendly platform.
