Thanks to several messages from the celebrity’s account, the trading volume of the associated SWEENEY token on the Solana blockchain exceeded $10 million within two hours of its launch on July 2.
Just over an hour after trading began, the asset’s price plummeted nearly 90% before stabilizing.
At the time of writing, SWEENEY’s market capitalization stands at $535,000. At its peak, the figure reached $3.88 million, according to DEX Screener.
The administrator of the token’s related Telegram channel implied responsibility for the hack.
According to Cointelegraph, in now-deleted messages, the perpetrator claimed involvement in recent hacks of X accounts belonging to rapper 50 Cent and former wrestler Hulk Hogan to promote fake tokens.
He promised a similar attack on the account of a celebrity more “famous” than Sweeney, but provided no details.
Earlier, ForkLog reported on the hacking of the X account of American metal band Metallica to promote the METAL token on Solana.
Back in May, hackers targeted X profiles of several influencers and celebrities to promote crypto scams.
