Hong Kong attackers steal $30,000 through Bitcoin ATM vulnerability

Hong Kong police have arrested three suspects in Bitcoin ATM fraud, according to the South China Morning Post.

Authorities opened the investigation after two cryptocurrency exchanges raised concerns. They suspected the attackers exploited a vulnerability in Bitcoin ATMs that allowed cash withdrawals without authorization.

What the vulnerability entailed has not been disclosed by the police.

The suspects illicitly obtained HK$230,000 (about $30,000) through the ATMs. They conducted 11 transactions.

Police said the alleged offenders are tied to a major criminal syndicate.

In July, Chinese authorities arrested the alleged organisers of the sale of counterfeit Huobi tokens.
