Hong Kong seizes 300 smuggled Nvidia CMP HX mining GPUs
Hong Kong’s Customs and Excise Department detained a fishing dhow aboard that carried 300 Nvidia CMP HX mining GPUs, according to reports Tom’s Hardware.
The vessel was anchored not far from Hong Kong International Airport. At night, unknown individuals began transferring boxes and crates from it to a nearby moored boat.
Detecting the surveillance, the suspects fled by boat toward the Chinese mainland. Police later detained the fishing dhow’s owner.
On board, alongside unmarked GPUs were smartphones, computer gadgets, and illegally caught exotic seafood. Customs estimates the value of the contraband equipment at around $257,000.
Nvidia released the CMP (Cryptocurrency Mining Processor) line of chips to meet miners’ demand.
First photographs of the lower-end model from the Gigabyte CMP 30HX series were published in March. Its Ethereum mining hash rate is 26 MH/s.
In late March, Canadian Hut 8 Mining Corp acquired CMP-series GPUs for $30 million to expand its mining business beyond Bitcoin. Equipment deliveries are expected in May 2021.
