Hugging Face CEO Raises Concerns Over China's AI Advancements

Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue expressed concerns about the rapid development of Chinese AI models and their susceptibility to censorship.

Recently, Chinese companies have showcased powerful neural networks that excel in programming and reasoning. However, they face criticism for censorship sensitive to Chinese politics.

Delangue warned of unforeseen consequences for Western companies that choose to integrate high-performance Chinese open-source AI into their products.

“If you create a chatbot and ask it a question about Tiananmen, it will respond differently than a system developed in France or the USA,” he noted.

According to Delangue, if China becomes the strongest country in AI, it could propagate certain cultural aspects that the Western world might not welcome.

“It is important that AI is distributed among all countries and that no one or two countries are much stronger than the rest,” added the CEO of Hugging Face.

His company specializes in developing and deploying AI tools. It provides an open-source library and infrastructure for developing and deploying machine learning models.

Meanwhile, one of China’s facial recognition pioneers, SenseTime, announced a major restructuring plan, which involves a shift to generative artificial intelligence.

The plan includes a focus on creating AI models and cloud technologies, as well as industry solutions for the automotive, medical, robotics, and retail sectors.

In July, researchers from SAS and Coleman Parkes named China as a leader in the adoption of generative artificial intelligence.
