
Hundreds of mining rigs shut down in Abkhazia raids
Abkhaz authorities continue raids to identify equipment used for cryptocurrency mining.
According to the local interior ministry, in the Ochamchyr District several mining farms were discovered. On the site of a canning plant, law enforcement authorities disabled 250 devices used for cryptocurrency mining; in various locations in the district, more than 630 devices in total were shut down.
In the Gulripshi District, authorities shut down two farms with 153 devices. In Sukhumi — another 45 miners.
A further number of mining farms were discovered, dismantled and sealed in other districts of Abkhazia.
Law enforcement will continue to search for illegal farms, with checks carried out both during the day and at night, the interior ministry said.
Abkhazia’s authorities banned cryptocurrency mining until 1 June 2021.
In March, the parliamentary committee on state-legal policy considered draft laws establishing fines and criminal liability for cryptocurrency mining.
