A municipal representative of the Democratic Coalition in Budapest, Thomas Borka-Saxon, is accused of stealing electricity for Bitcoin mining. Local media report this.
Police raided a government building in Erzsébetváros district, where Borka-Saxon’s office was located, and seized cryptocurrency mining equipment.
The source did not disclose the number of mined bitcoins or the extent of damage to the capital’s power grid.
The mayor of Erzsébetváros, Péter Niedermüller, strongly condemned his colleague’s actions:
“A fellow party member has disappointed me greatly. Or perhaps that word is not strong enough. He betrayed me. The rule of law and adherence to moral principles apply to everyone. And, in particular, to members of my party,” he wrote on Facebook.
“Miner” has already resigned and left the party.
