Hyundai to establish AI and robotics institute

The Hyundai Motor Group announced the creation of the Boston Dynamics AI Institute fund to promote research in artificial intelligence and robotics.

The organization will be led by the founder of Boston Dynamics, Marc Raibert, who stepped down as CEO at the end of 2019.

The institute’s headquarters will be located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States.

“Our mission is to create future generations of advanced robots and intelligent machines that will be smarter, more agile, more perceptive and safer than anything that exists today,” Raibert said.

According to him, the institute will focus on creating easier-to-use and more productive robots capable of performing a wide range of tasks.

Hyundai plans to invest around $400 million in the organization. The company noted that it is actively hiring researchers and engineers who will join the Cambridge-based team.

In May, Hyundai announced plans to invest $5 billion in the development of artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles and robotics.

In June 2021, the automaker acquired 80% of Boston Dynamics for $1.1 billion.
