IBM unveils 433-qubit quantum processor

IBM unveiled at the Quantum Summit 2022 a quantum processor called Osprey, containing 433 qubits. Reuters reports this.

According to representatives of the tech giant, classical bits can be in a state of either one or zero. By contrast, qubits exist in a complex superposition of both states, exploiting the fundamental quantum nature of matter at subatomic levels.

“Quantum computers offer the possibility of a substantial increase in computational power, which can be used for complex computations in tasks of artificial intelligence, drug discovery, and energy research,” the press release says.

The company noted that Osprey contains three times as many qubits as last year’s Eagle model: 433 and 127, respectively.

\n\n\n\n

By 2025 IBM plans to build a system with more than 4,000 qubits. Before that, the company intends to develop two more processors:

\n\n\n\n

  • Condor with 1,121 qubits in 2023;
  • Flamingo with 1,386 qubits in 2024.

The tech giant also shared details about the quantum mainframe Quantum System Two. It plans to house several functional processors and integrate them into a single system.

The launch of Quantum System Two will take place in 2023.

\n\n\n\n

In total, IBM owns 20 quantum computers worldwide. Users can access them via the company’s cloud services.

In April 2021, IBM unveiled open software for training AI on quantum computers.

\n\n\n\n

In May of the same year, the tech giant announced a 120-fold acceleration of quantum computations.
