ID.me confirms use of a vast facial-recognition database

The developer of the facial-recognition system ID.me uses powerful technology to match biometric data against a large database, despite earlier denials.

“ID.me uses a special check “1 to many” for selfies linked to government programs to prevent mass identity theft of innocent victims,” said Blake Hall, the company’s chief executive.

In his words, this step is internal to the service and does not require use of any external or government database.

This statement contrasts with Hall’s comments сделанными several days earlier.

“Our face-matching system “1 to 1” is comparable to a selfie for unlocking a smartphone. ID.me does not use facial recognition “1 to many,” which is a more complex and problematic [method],” he said.

In a new statement, Hall said that the 1-to-many check is performed once during user registration. He says this ensures that the same person does not register multiple accounts.

He added that abandoning the check would immediately lead to serious identity theft and organized crime.

ID.me’s facial-recognition technology is used by 10 federal agencies, 30 states and more than 500 private companies. In the summer of 2022, the IRS plans to integrate the biometric company’s system for users of some online services.

The American Civil Liberties Union has urged the agency to drop the ID.me system. According to the organization’s representatives, the technology is less accurate for people of color, and the requirement to use biometric identification raises privacy concerns.

Oregon Senator Ron Wyden also expressed concern about the IRS’s use. He urged the agency to greater transparency in its plans.

In June 2021, due to errors in ID.me’s facial-recognition system, many Americans lost unemployment benefits.

In April, the facial-recognition algorithms of the Proctorio program, which monitors the integrity of exams, were accused of bias against Black users.
