In Hong Kong, Bitcoin ‘sellers’ stole nearly $500,000

In Hong Kong, criminals robbed two employees of a currency exchange company during a Bitcoin purchase deal worth 3.85 million Hong Kong dollars (about $495,000 at the time of writing). This was reported by the South China Morning Post.

According to police, the victims handed over cash to men who claimed to be sellers in order to buy the cryptocurrency.

Afterwards, one of them left the premises, allegedly to complete the paperwork.

Some time later, the company staff went after the missing “seller.” His partner tried to escape, but the buyers detained the man and handed him over to the police. The second suspect remains at large.

Earlier, an anonymous investor sent 10 BTC to the scammers, who, from a fake Elon Musk Twitter account, promised to double the sent amount.

reported that the share of crime-related transactions in cryptocurrencies fell to $10 billion in 2020.

According to a CipherTrace analysts’ report, in 2020 losses from crimes involving digital assets reached $1.9 billion.
