The regulator’s initiative is part of the ОЭСР‘s network on financial education, designed to gauge the population’s financial literacy. Portugal ranked seventh among 26 countries on this metric.
The CNSF survey drew 977 respondents. Digital assets proved to be the least-known financial instrument — only 34.7% of respondents had heard of them. The most widely known were demand and term deposits, known by 99.3% and 93.5% of respondents, respectively.
Since 2019, trading in cryptocurrencies and payments using digital assets have been exempt from value-added tax.
In June 2021, the Bank of Portugal issued licences for virtual asset service providers to two bitcoin exchanges — Criptoloja and Mind the Coin.
