The St. Petersburg police detained a 27-year-old resident of Novosibirsk, accused of stealing funds from bank cards and transferring them into cryptocurrencies.

According to investigators, the culprit installed a hidden camera on the ceiling of a shopping mall and tracked the PIN codes entered by visitors during ATM use.

The ATM itself housed a device for reading data from plastic cards. The obtained information allowed the creation of duplicates and withdrawals from accounts.

Investigators believe that over two months more than 100 people became victims. The amount of losses exceeds 12 million rubles. The stolen funds were transferred to controlled accounts, and then converted into cryptocurrencies.

Investigators detained the suspect at the Novosibirsk railway station; he is described as the alleged organizer of the criminal scheme. A laptop and communications equipment were seized.

The suspect has been remanded in custody, and his accomplices are being identified.
