In Ukraine, extortionists tortured Kyiv-based cryptocurrency businessman to extract $800,000

Ukrainian law enforcement authorities suspect a group of individuals of extortion, conspiracy and kidnapping, who tortured a Kyiv resident whose business is linked to cryptocurrency. This was reported on the сайте Национальной полиции.

The victim travelled to the city of Ternopil to visit a relative. As he was leaving the town, a group of unknown individuals blocked his way.

“The perpetrators pulled the man from the car and forcibly stuffed him into the trunk of a foreign-made vehicle, handcuffing him,” according to a police statement.

His wife was placed in another vehicle and taken away to an unknown destination. Later it emerged that she was being held in one of Ternopil’s hotels. No physical force was used against her.

According to the victim, he was tortured all night and threatened with death if he did not pay $800 000. He reported the crime himself — the suspects did not find a second phone during the search.

Law enforcement detained three of the seven suspects. Later, the organizer surrendered to the police of his own accord. A criminal case has already been opened against him for drug trafficking as part of an organised crime group.

All the suspects were charged under Articles 146 (unlawful deprivation of liberty or kidnapping by prior conspiracy), 189 (extortion, carried out repeatedly or in conspiracy) and 289 (illegal seizure of a vehicle) of the Ukrainian Criminal Code.
